As one of the nation’s fastest courts, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA) is often referred to as “The Rocket Docket.” In civil cases, trials often happen within 8 months of filing, and discovery periods last less than 120 days, without continuances. Motions get resolved weekly. And the court sticks to these deadlines. Criminal cases move just as fast where non-complex criminal cases are often set for trial within the 70-day statutory speedy trial time period (per 18 U.S.C. 3161) from indictment or charging information and even complex and multi-defendant cases are often set and tried within 6 months of indictment.
